Progressing on the Path

Editorial

Buddhism is a way of life based on the training of the mind or mental development, with the ultimate aim of liberation from suffering by gaining insight into the true nature of things.

According to the Buddha, the mind can be trained by following 3 steps of the Noble Eightfold Path: right effort, right mindfulness and right meditation.

The enthusiasm and sincerity to do something well is Right effort and it is the root of all achievements. If you have read and started practising the instructions in Strength Training for the Mind (page 42) in this and the last issue, you have started cultivating right effort.

The awareness of one’s actions, speech and thoughts is Right mindfulness. If you are constantly aware of your state of mind during meditation, then there is less tendency of developing a dull or mechanical mind as mentioned in Sleeping Zen (page 48).

The gradual process of training the mind to concentrate or focus, thus calming and preparing the mind to realise the true nature of things is Right meditation. In order to do this, one has to learn from a qualified teacher. There are many centres which offer basic meditation courses and retreats (see listing on page 29-38). One of them is mentioned in depth on page 47.
